From Multiply: Daughters and Poverty (2009)

Blog EntryFeb 15, '09 9:59 AM
for everyone
here's something to think about: i recently heard that in the province, some people would actually prefer having a daughter because there is a chance of getting her married to a moneyed foreigner, thereby alleviating the family from poverty (or at least improve their standard of living). now, the chances are probably not so bad as evidenced by the number of interracial pairs you see in public places. also, considering the aging population of most developed countries, there must be a number of lonely, mature-in-terms-of-age, men.

exploitation, colonial mentality, cycle of poverty, urban bias (lack of developments in the province -- lack of opportunities for economic prosperity), what else?

i'm tired. belated happy hearts day.

it's good business... we tried to experiment by putting up a profile on a dating site... filipina seeking foreign husband... you won't believe the number of responses we got.

btw, having kids for business purposes isn't new. i know some parents whose reasons fro having kids is for them to lift the family out of poverty - wether by marriage or profession.

i hate this line of thinking. it's prostitution in the new century.
