pizza. | for everyone |
I realized that Cebu has a lot of local pizza restaurants that have become famous over the last few years. And unlike most pizza restaurants that dominate the Manila scene (Pizza Hut, Shakey’s, Yellow Cab, Sbarro, Domino’s, Greenwich, etc etc.), where majority is an imported franchise, these local restaurants mostly started out as a little known hole-in-the-wall type of place that became famous for their food via word-of-mouth. Back when I was still based in Manila, I don’t really recall hearing about a similar kind of pizza restaurant. In other words, a Cielo’s Donuts or Banapple of pizza. The type that people would bring as pasalubong or would ‘go the distance’ to try because they heard it was thaaat good. Was there any? It hadn’t reached me, sorry nalang. :P
Anyway, I think that the reason why I thought of pizza was because I was remembering last Friday when I had Calda (along Salinas Drive) and Alberto’s (along B. Rodriguez) in one night. Both are ‘up and coming’ pizza brands, and I’ve heard good reviews for both also. I couldn’t help but compare. I would have to say that Alberto’s was better, although Calda wasn’t bad either. I ate Calda when I was famished, anything would have tasted good at that point, but Alberto’s, which I ate for the sake of eating (gluttony, I know) because I was full, totally beat it. There was something about the dough, it had a non-generic, non-bland taste to it. I think that some people overlook the dough, but it’s really a subtle component that can make or break pizza.
I’m analyzing pizza. I think too much.
Oh. I STILL haven’t been to MB’s. It’s been, what? 2 years since I first heard of it? Is it even open still? Really spicy hot sauce daw (Da Vinci’s hot sauce, I couldn’t even feel you.). Food trip anyone?
Oh oh. Funny / interesting / weird story on Alberto's that I heard from my uncle. Alberto's pizza is different from Alberto pizza. Although they are essentially the same. Apparently, the original owners of Alberto's had a misunderstanding and 'separated.' The partner that 'divested' decided to open his / her own pizza restaurant and named it Alberto. Aside from the similarities in the name, they also supposedly serve the same kind of food. Or so I heard.
